CHAPTER 18

I spent the last four weeks of my senior year the same way I spent the first four weeks of my freshman year: utterly alone.

I poured my heart out to Chloe on so many occasions, in so many different places, I was starting to repeat myself. But she wouldn't budge. She was treating me the same way she would treat a casual girlfriend who scorned her—with bitter contempt. Even though I was moving to L.A. in a few weeks, and even though I wanted to spend every waking second with her while I still could, every time she saw me she ran in the other direction. I was nothing to her now but a disease, one she was trying her damnedest to extricate from her system.

And then, of course, there was the school musical. What a pain it was trying to get everything ready for Hairspray with Chloe close by pretending I didn’t exist. Donavin wasn’t giving me the time of day, either; there was no backstage flirting going on with the tan, dreamy senior any longer. While Chloe worked hard to avoid my gaze, he didn’t have any trouble.

The one person who did make conversation with me here and there, funnily enough, was Maberly. Either Donavin hadn’t revealed what I told him on prom night, or he had and she didn’t care, since apparently to her I wasn’t going to stop the inevitable. She had such a tight grip around his testicles that the only way he could leave her now was one body part at a time.

She had never gone out of her way to talk to me, but that Friday she tracked me down in the parking lot after fifth period. It was May seventeenth, mere hours before opening night of Hairspray. I had asked Chloe if she needed me to help her after school, and she said, as expected, she had everything covered. I headed outside and tried my best to shake my mounting depression.

I walked to my car, took out my keys, and there she was. Maberly had a big, dumb smile on her face.

“Hey,” I said, loud and forced. I felt like I hadn’t said a word to anyone in days. “What’s going on?”
